Longing for Love Recently, a friend said something that stayed with me: “Deep down, we all long for love.” It got me thinking. Why do we carry this longing within us? And why is it that even when we find someone to love, even when we are loved in return, something deep within us can still feel unfulfilled? I believe this longing is innate, but for it to truly subside, we must first understand what love is. We must explore its depths and touch its very source. But how many of us truly understand love? If love means, “I love you, so you must love me in return,” or “I am good to you, so you must be good to me,” is that really love? If we measure someone’s worth by their possessions or financial security before opening our hearts to them, have we not already reduced love to a transaction? Practical considerations have their place, but when love becomes a calculation of gains and losses, we move away from its very essence. I would argue that love, in its purest form, is selfless. To experience it, we must move beyond the ego, that part of ourselves which seeks to protect, possess, and control. This does not mean losing our individuality or dignity, but transcending the sense of separateness that prevents us from experiencing a deeper connection. For beneath our desire for affection, companionship, and security lies something far more profound: the longing for union. To love someone so completely that the boundaries between ourselves and the beloved dissolve, until we no longer feel separate, emotionally, physically, or spiritually. To become one. Yet few of us ever experience such depths. We are instinctively driven by self-preservation, approaching relationships with expectations, conditions, and fears. We want to love, but we are afraid to lose ourselves. We long to become one with another, yet cling to the very ego that keeps us apart. And therein lies the contradiction. We may marry, build a home, and enjoy a comfortable life, yet still feel an emptiness within, a longing that remains unfulfilled. Because what we ultimately seek is not simply someone to share our lives with, but freedom from the boundaries of ourselves. But what if this union is not limited to another person? What if becoming one with the beloved is merely a doorway to something infinitely greater? I believe that when the ego falls away, even for a fleeting moment, we may glimpse a reality that ordinarily escapes us: that we are not isolated beings, but part of the whole of existence, inseparable from the life around us. To remain permanently in such a state may require enlightenment, yet even a momentary glimpse can transform our understanding of life. And perhaps it is then that our longing begins to subside, because we have touched what we were searching for all along. Such an experience also reveals that love is not possession. We can love someone with our whole being and still let them go if they wish to leave. Not because their departure doesn’t break our hearts, but because true love allows freedom. The beloved may leave, but what has awakened within us remains. They may have opened the door, but the source of love was always within us. And perhaps this is the greatest mystery of love. We spend our lives searching for someone to make us feel complete, only to discover that what we truly long for is freedom from the sense of separateness that makes us feel incomplete. Once we have glimpsed that oneness, love is no longer confined to the beloved. It becomes a way of experiencing life itself, in the people around us, in nature, in the stillness of a quiet moment, and in the simple wonder of being alive. We can love deeply without holding on, let go without ceasing to love, and be alone without feeling separate from existence. Perhaps, after all, we do not long for love because we are incomplete. We long for love because we have forgotten that we are already part of the whole. And when we finally remember, even for a moment, the longing may begin to fade. Not because we have stopped loving, but because we have finally touched the very essence of love. ❤️
