Attachment is not love. Attachment is the fear of losing what you have. When you say, “I love you,” but inside if you are constantly afraid, “What if you leave me?” “What if you love someone else?” “What if you change?” then what you call love is slowly becoming a cage.
Love gives freedom. Attachment demands security. Love says, “I want you to be happy.” Attachment says, “I want you to make me happy.” The moment you become dependent on another person for your peace, you begin to place a burden upon them that no human being can carry. Then affection becomes expectation. Expectation becomes disappointment. Disappointment becomes resentment. And slowly, the very person you once loved becomes the person you blame for your suffering. The deeper truth is this: You cannot possess another human being. You can share life with someone. You can walk beside them. You can experience intimacy, tenderness and profound connection. But you cannot own their mind, their emotions, their journey or their destiny. Attachment says, “You are mine.” Love says, “I am grateful that our paths have met.” When there is attachment, you constantly try to hold on. When there is love, you become capable of letting life breathe. And this does not mean becoming cold or indifferent.
